Leaving home to live by yourself is a huge step. Unless you are in danger at home, or have been told you have to leave right away (in which case read Leaving in a Hurry); take your time to think through your decision and to plan your move very carefully.
Are you ready to move out?
If you are over 16 you can probably legally move out, check your facts on our basic legal information page.
Try making a list of pros and cons of living independently. On the upside, you have more freedom and you can make your own rules. But don't forget to think about how ready you are to pay the rent yourself, do all your own washing, cooking and cleaning, paying the bills. Have a look at the Money Matters section for more information on planning your finances and services that could help you.
If you are sure you want to leave, and are ready to do it:
Talk about it. Speak to your family, carers or friends who have moved out. They can give you some valuable advice and might even help you find somewhere to live. Look in our Useful Contacts for advice on some of the services available locally to give advice and support.
Plan your budget. Before you move anywhere, work out whether you can afford it. The Money Matters pages will help you understand some of the costs involved in having your own place. If you can't afford to move right now, can you wait a while until you have saved up?
Look at your options. Read our pages on common housing options for young people, and find out more about what type of accommodation suits you (and your budget) best.
Think about what to take. If you move into an unfurnished property you'll need some basic furniture before you move in. Friends and family may be able to help you out with some of this, or have a look at furniture schemes to see if they could help. Even if your property is furnished, you'll still need some basic essentials - follow this link to find out more about what you'll need to start you off.
