Broxtowe Borough Council owns about 4,775 homes – over a third of which are for people at or nearing retirement age. There are many more people wanting homes than there are homes available, so the council have to decide who is in the greatest need.
To join the waiting list for a council property, you must:
Live in the Borough of Broxtowe (or have a proven need to live in the borough to give or receive support, or to be near employment)
OR
Living in unfit or overcrowded conditions
OR
In need of rehousing because of social or medical reasons affecting you or someone who might reasonably be expected to live with you
OR
Living in privately rented accommodation without security of tenure (normally this will NOT include Assured Shorthold Tenancies)
As well as these general rules, each of the three waiting lists has its own eligibility rules:
Families list – you must be at least 16 years old AND either have a child/children living at home; OR be pregnant
Adult list – you must be at least 18 years old
Elderly list – you must be at least 60 years old. (If a joint application, at least one of the applicants needs to be over 60).
The council has a duty to house anyone fitting their definition of homelessness, click here for more information. The council has a number of properties used to temporarily house people who have been accepted as homeless and are waiting for suitable, permanent housing to become available.
