I'm not safe at home

If you are in danger of violence or abuse in your home, it may be essential that you get out immediately. It is possible to arrange somewhere safe to stay at short notice, and there are people who can help you plan how to leave and where to go as safely as possible.

Childline or the NSPCC can help you if you are at risk of or are suffering abuse or violence of any kind. Women’s Aid and the National Domestic Violence Helpline will give advice, support and assistance in complete confidence. If you are under 18 social services may be able to help.

If you don’t feel you have time to plan a move, try to arrange a place to stay. Family, friends, hostels and B&Bs or refuges are options. If you can’t find a place to stay, go to the Council’s Housing Options Team and ask for advice.

Try to remember to take important documents like your birth certificate, driving licence and passport with you, you might need identification – do not put your safety at risk to get them though. If you can take money, medication, clothing, toiletries and belongings that are important to you then do so – if it is not safe to take any or all of these things then leave them and try to get emergency supplies.

The council will help you find somewhere to stay temporarily while your situation is looked at. If you need food, toiletries or other essentials you might be able to claim an emergency parcel from the Broxtowe Basic Box scheme – phone 0115 9497790

If you’re not sure if what you are experiencing is abusive, read through our article on domestic abuse, or speak to someone about your situation. Everyone has a right to a home in which they feel safe from harm or the threat of harm – the council will support you in finding somewhere safe to stay.
