Happy 25th Birthday BYH!

This year, Broxtowe Youth Homelessness (previously known as Broxtowe Single Homeless Action Group)is celebrating our 25th year of preventing homelessness and supporting young homeless people in the area.

Our Past

Broxtowe Single Homeless Action Group (BSHAG) was formed in 1984 by a group of local people concerned with the number of young homeless people in Broxtowe. The charity originally provided housing to young people, only later changing direction and concentrating on preventative work.

Our Present

Broxtowe Youth Homelessness, as we're now known, deliver The Activity Home Street Home (our homelessness awareness session) to students in Year 11 in schools across Broxtowe, Erewash and Amber Valley. The Activity is also delivered to young people in colleges, youth groups and alternative educational settings in the area. We aim to raise awareness, challenge stereotypes, and equip young people with the information they need to help them avoid homelessness, or to access appropriate support if they do find themselves facing homelessness.

Our Peer Education project called Peer Impact, where young people who have experienced homelessness accompany us into schools to share their experiences, has been a resounding success.

Our newly developed Budgeting Activity named Reality Street, aims to help young people gain an understanding of the costs involved in independent living, as well as learning about how to take control of their finances.

BYH still provide direct assistance to young homeless people in the borough through the Basic Box Scheme, which supplies emergency food and toiletries parcels to those going through homelessness, and home starter packs to young people getting back on their feet.

Our Future

We are very excited to have celebrated our 25 year anniversary in June this year with the launch of the second edition of 'On Your Feet!' magazine, this website and a film about the project; as well continuing to develop all of our existing areas of work.
