Home Street Home: The Activity

home street home

'Home Street Home': The Homelessness Activity presented by BYH is delivered in various settings, including schools, colleges and youth groups.

We aim to:

  • Raise awareness of youth homelessness
  • Explore the realities of homelessness
  • Inform young people of available advice and support
  • Challenge the stereotypes surrounding homelessness
  • Equip young people with the information required to make informed choices about leaving home

BYH has built up a strong reputation for its prevention work, usually with Year 11 students in schools throughout Broxtowe, Amber Valley and Erewash - and now Gedling. We also deliver the session to young people in alternative education, youth offending groups, colleges etc.

Participants work in groups to explore scenarios based on the real-life experiences of young homeless people (including our peer educators). The stereotypes surrounding homelessness are challenged as participants consider the implications of becoming homeless, and the options available to homeless young people. The session is based on group discussion, often lead by a peer educator, with many opportunities for class feedback and questions.

Participants consider:

  • what it might feel like to stay in temporary accommodation
  • what it might feel like to sleep rough
  • what are the typical issues affecting young homeless people - health problems, drugs, loneliness, lack of money
  • what a young homeless person might miss from home
  • what options are available in each scenario - including fleeing domestic violence, parental eviction, debt and teenage pregnancy
  • what support services are available and how they can be contacted

Young people who participate in The Activity in Broxtowe are given a copy of On Your Feet! Magazine, and a Helpcard containing details of relevant services.
