Will I get my own flat?

doorkey

Probably not. At least, not straight away.

The Council just don't have enough properties to allocate a flat or house to every person who presents as homeless. If you are classed as homeless and are in priority need, the Council do have a duty to house you temporarily until they have helped you find a suitable settled home though.

Most young people who are accepted as homeless will be offered a place in supported accommodation (a hostel). This gives you an opportunity to get support in learning all the skills you need to look after yourself. Before you are ready to take on your own tenancy, you need to be confident that you can manage your money and look after yourself. Cooking, cleaning, budgeting and paying bills are all skills that have to be learned. If you are supported in learning to do all these things well, you have more chance of successfully managing a propery when you are allocated one.

Depending on your circumstances, and what accommodation is available at the time, the Council might offer you a temporary house or flat until a suitable, permanent home becomes available.

Have a look at the Housing Options pages to find out more about Council Housing and the other options available to you.
