'Fresh start for local homelessness charity'

Staff at a local homelessness charity are celebrating a fresh start.

Broxtowe Single Homeless Action Group has changed it's name to Broxtowe Youth Homelessness. Coupled with a significant funding award from the Big Lottery Fund, this change puts the project on a strong footing for the future.

Broxtowe Youth Homelessness has been awarded £212,000 over three years by the Big Lottery Fund to prevent and tackle homelessness across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. This will enable them to bring in two new staff members who will work directly with schools and youth groups to spread awareness about homelessness and money management. BYH will also be providing support to parents of teenagers at risk of being asked to leave the family home.

Jenny Allen, Chair of the Management Committee, said: 'Homelessness can have long-term implications for young people's health, education and employment prospects. We're delighted to receive this funding, which will enable us to extend our work to prevent homelessness across Broxtowe and the surrounding area.'

Kay Verity, Project Manager, said: 'We,re changing our name to better reflect the work we do. We aim to work with young people to prevent and tackle homelessness and our new name makes this clear straight away.

'Magazine in the Making'

With support from the Broxtowe Action Fund, BSHAG is working in partnership with residents of Stepping Stones hostel in Eastwood to produce a magazine providing information and advice for young people who are homeless or may be at risk of homelessness. The magazine will include interviews, features as well as a directory of agencies and organisations which are able to offer support and advice to young people.

Agencies and organisations are invited to sponsor the project by including information on their services in the magazine. Over 10,000 copies of the magazine will be distributed to young people in the autumn after the magazine launch.

Identify provisions available for young people within the borough and surrounding areas and to brief on theri rights in relation to housing, social services and welfare rights.

This is an invaluable course designed for individuals or groups working young people who, whilst not directly involved in homelessness work, may encounter a young person who is homeless or threatenend with homelessness.
