About UsBroxtowe Youth Homelessness (formerly known as Broxtowe Single Homeless Action Group BSHAG) was formed in 1984 by a group of people with concerns about the growing number of homeless young people in the borough of Broxtowe, Nottinghamshire. During the first few years BSHAG worked in partnership with Leicester Housing Association to provide 9 bedsits for 16-25 year old single homeless people from the district. In 1993 Leicester Housing Association took over responsibility for the properties and BSHAG was able to review the work of the group and the needs of the young single homeless people in the area. New research was undertaken by the group to ascertain the reasons why young people were becoming homeless and to provide evidence of the problems they faced when this happened. A research report entitled ‘A Place to Belong’ was compiled. One of the main recommendations from the report was the need for more partnership working between agencies, and the result was the establishment of the Broxtowe Youth Homelessness Inter-Agency Forum, which meets quarterly to address the homelessness issues affecting Broxtowe young people. BSHAG’s main aim now was the prevention of homelessness, and an interactive Homelessness Activity developed by the group and delivered by BYH staff in schools and youth groups has been tremendously successful in making young people aware of homelessness issues and how and where to get help when problems arise. ‘Off the Street’ advice booklets and Telephone Helpcards have also been well received by young people, teachers and agencies alike.
